Built by Wm Jacks for their own use.  On Jacks' death in 1908 "Arab" was sold to a partnership of K Law, R Hetherington & H A Wilson.

In 1917 it was bought by John Kelly & Co. and from then until 1928 worked on their admiralty contracts in Ireland. I have no information to say one way or the other, but I expect that Arab must have been modified by the addition of bulwarks to enable her to operate safely in more open waters, let alone to cross the Irish Sea.

In 1928 she returned to the Clyde when acquired by G & G Transport of Glasgow. They converted her to a dumb barge.

The picture below, believed to be from 1905, shows her on the Forth & Clyde Canal at Lock 16 at Camelon just outside Falkirk, with a full cargo of what looks like coal. In the background are some of the chimneys of the Carron Iron Works, at the time the largest iron foundry in the world.
